Sometimes all a printed maxi dress needs is a pair of sandals. For dinner outside, it might be wide-leg trousers with a glimpse of pink beneath a kimono. These six plus-size bohemian outfits play with print, colour and length, with room to move whatever the day holds.

1. A maxi dress in full bloom

Turquoise, yellow and red run through this maxi dress, right down to the cuffs. As you lift an arm, the flared sleeve opens to reveal the full sweep of the print. Natural leather sandals pair beautifully with those vivid colours.

The dress has a smocked waist. Tie the neckline loosely for a more open V, or draw the laces a little closer.

2. A floral jacket that doubles as a blouse

Against white trousers, you can see exactly where this little red jacket ends. Try it with a high waist and cross the fronts as you would a wrap blouse. The matching belt blends into the tiny flowers, leaving the flared cuffs as the detail you notice when you move.

For lunch outdoors, keep the white trousers and add canvas espadrilles. If you prefer the jacket open, slip an ecru tank underneath. The plus-size cut is recommended for French sizes 42–46 worn closed, or 42–50 worn open.

3. Barefoot evenings in a plum kaftan

Pink and turquoise flowers wind through the paisley on this plum kaftan. The fabric falls in one sweep from the V-neck to the floor. Let the tasselled ties hang in view. They give the neckline all the detail you might otherwise look for in a long necklace.

For supper at home, I’d wear it just like this with small hoop earrings. For an evening out, try flat copper sandals with the rich plum print. The same loose cut fits French sizes 36–50.

4. A turquoise kimono for the first cup of the day

With a cup in hand and the belt tied, you can see how the wide sleeves fall as the elbows bend. Try the robe over a sea-green slip, or pair it with an ecru tank and soft shorts.

If you like wearing it wrapped, tie the belt loosely to one side. The fronts meet and you can follow the fine botanical print all the way down the robe. The plus-size cut of this loungewear kimono fits French sizes 48–56.

5. Turquoise palazzo trousers for an evening of music

The same paisley runs through the wide trousers and the matching kimono. In the photograph, a pink top makes a bright panel between the black borders. For an outdoor concert, borrow that idea with a tank you can tuck in to show the waistband.

Leave the kimono open so its fronts swing separately from the trouser legs as you walk. Another day, wear the trousers on their own with an ecru tee to pick up the pale details in the print. The XL variant is labelled French size 48, and the set’s guide gives a French size range of 46–50.

6. A short Japanese-inspired kimono over white

The fronts of this short Japanese-inspired kimono wrap across the body. Burgundy trim follows the neckline all the way to the hem. In the photograph, white trousers pick up the pale leaves in the print. Try wearing the kimono open over a white tank and the same trousers to carry that colour through the outfit.

For evening, keep the trousers and wrap the kimono over a wine-coloured tank. Tie the matching belt to one side, leaving a little of the tank visible at the neckline. The size guide recommends the plus-size cut for L–XXL worn open and L–XL worn wrapped.

Start with the detail you love. The pink in the kaftan might suggest a pair of earrings, or the turquoise kimono could lead you to a sea-green slip. One small echo is often enough. Walk a little, take a seat and see how the fabric moves with you.

The six pieces featured here are made from sari silk, a new fabric composed of 70% recycled silk fibres and 30% viscose (rayon).
