A white linen shirt with a Cuban collar, worn loose over pale jeans, is the first of our seven bohemian looks for men. Those same jeans work with a kimono jacket over a tank or a printed shirt tucked into the waistband. The outfits take us from a slow breakfast at home to dinner in town.

1. White linen and pale denim in the shade

Seated on a stone wall, the model wears the white shirt loose over light blue jeans. The light picks out the fine linen weave. The Cuban collar falls open naturally, and coconut buttons add a little brown between the two flap pockets. Leave the hem untucked to get the same easy drape.

On holiday, swap the jeans for tobacco-coloured Bermuda shorts. Keep the shirt buttoned with the collar open. Its short sleeves and relaxed cut make it comfortable worn next to the skin. Brown leather sandals pick up the colour of the buttons.

2. A paisley jacket for a walk into town

Start with a white tank tucked into jeans and brown loafers. Wear the kimono jacket open, with the two fronts framing the white. Against that plain strip of fabric, the turquoise and burgundy in the paisley are easy to pick out.

The jeans finish above the loafers. If you try the look with a longer pair of dark jeans, turn up the hems just enough to show the shoes. A close-fitting tank leaves room for the short jacket to swing across the shoulders as you walk.

3. A long kimono for a leisurely breakfast

Barefoot at the breakfast table, the kimono falls below the knee and the wide sleeves drape over the forearms. Here the blue and orange paisley carries the whole outfit. To wear it as a robe at home, cross the fronts and tie the belt to one side, leaving yourself room to sit comfortably.

Prefer it open? Slip a navy tee and plain cotton shorts underneath. The navy brings out the orange in the print, and the shorts sit comfortably beneath the long fabric when you pull up a chair.

4. A retro collar for dinner

Standing in the doorway, the model wears this dark shirt with pale jeans ripped at the knees. The wide French collar against the fine beige floral print gives the shirt its sixties feel. Leave the top button open and the sleeves long to show the rounded cuffs.

For dinner, switch to straight charcoal trousers and tuck the shirt in. Its fitted cut works well at the waistband. Add black loafers and let the collar and the sheen of the sari silk draw the eye.

5. Burnt-orange borders for drinks with friends

A glass in hand, the jacket open over bare skin, turned-up jeans and loafers. The orange borders make two clear lines down the chest, and the short cut leaves the waistband of the jeans in view.

For drinks with friends, keep the loafers and slip a chocolate-brown tee under the jacket. The brown echoes the shoes and brings out the blue in the print. Choose sleeves short enough to sit inside the jacket sleeves.

6. A Cuban collar with sun-faded denim

Under the stone arches, bright green leaves stand out against faded blue jeans. The Cuban collar sits open and the short sleeves leave the forearms bare. Wear this viscose shirt untucked, as in the photograph. The soft hem and twin chest pockets keep it relaxed even with the buttons done up.

For lunch outdoors, swap the jeans in the photo for beige linen trousers. Wear the shirt open over a white tank and finish with brown leather sandals.

7. A long kimono over holiday shorts

In the doorway, dark shorts finish high on the thigh while the turquoise kimono falls below the knee. The difference in length makes this outfit. Wear the kimono open so the plain shorts set off the turquoise and burgundy paisley.

For a meal on the terrace, add a tank in the same shade as the shorts and a pair of espadrilles. Leave the belt off and let the two fronts move separately as you walk.

Start with your favourite jeans. Let the Cuban-collar shirt hang loose, tuck in the retro shirt or wear a kimono jacket open over a tank. The same trousers take you in three different directions, depending on what you feel like wearing.

The green Cuban-collar shirt is 100% viscose and the white one is 100% linen. The retro shirt, both jackets and both long kimonos are made from sari silk, a new fabric composed of 70% recycled silk fibres and 30% viscose (rayon).
