Choosing fabrics is an essential part of creating the collections of L’Atelier de Sonja. I love flowing materials, expressive prints and textures that feel good to wear.
Each fabric has its own qualities and brings a different personality to the garments.
Indian silk, or sari silk
Indian silk, also known as sari silk, holds a special place at the heart of the collections of L’Atelier de Sonja. Rooted in India’s rich textile traditions, this fabric is loved for its fluidity, softness and naturally elegant drape.
But what exactly is sari silk?
Unlike pure mulberry silk, the sari silk we use is a blend of 70% recycled or regenerated silk and 30% viscose. This combination gives silk a new life while bringing together the complementary qualities of these two fibres.
Silk lends its softness, delicate sheen and refined appearance, while viscose adds suppleness, fluidity and comfort.
The result is a lightweight fabric that feels good to wear and is easier to live with day to day than some delicate natural silks. Less prone to creasing and able to hold its shape well, it moves naturally with the body while maintaining an elegant silhouette.
I particularly appreciate this fabric for its rich prints, depth of colour and ability to give each creation its own character. It lends itself beautifully to our kimonos, dresses and bohemian sets, with the blend of ease and refinement that defines L’Atelier de Sonja.
A fabric that brings together the charm of Indian craftsmanship, the pleasure of wearing beautiful textiles and effortless elegance.
Viscose
Soft, light and fluid, viscose is particularly pleasant to wear. Made from processed cellulose, it is known for its graceful drape and suppleness.
It is ideal for blouses, dresses and loose-fitting clothes, moving naturally with the wearer.
I love working with this fabric to create comfortable, feminine clothes with beautiful prints.
Cotton
A natural fibre valued for its softness and breathability, cotton is an easy choice for everyday outfits.
In our collections, it lends itself especially well to traditional Indian prints, including block printing, a technique that uses carved blocks to print patterns onto fabric.
Cotton fabrics bring an artisanal, relaxed feel to our creations.
Linen
Natural, breathable and durable, linen is a fabric I particularly enjoy for warmer days.
Its distinctive texture and drape give clothes a simple, timeless elegance.
We select linen that feels pleasant to the touch, both supple and light, making it ideal for shirts, dresses and other summer pieces.
Choosing fabrics
Beyond their individual qualities, I choose my fabrics above all for what they inspire: a colour, a print, a texture or the desire to create.
It is this diversity that makes the collections of L’Atelier de Sonja so rich.
